Aerobic exercises are some of the best ways you can keep your heart strong and healthy. They improve circulation, increase overall fitness, and can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The improved circulation helps lower blood pressure and improves how well the heart pumps.

Examples of aerobic exercises include running, swimming, cycling, and brisk walking. Experts suggest doing aerobic activity at least 30 minutes per day, five days a week.

Strength/Resistance Training

Strength training helps create leaner muscle mass and reduces fat. People who carry a lot of body fat are at higher risk of heart disease, and a combination of aerobic and resistance training may help raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol.

Examples: Push-ups, squats, chin-ups, resistance bands, and weights.

Stretching

While stretching and improving your flexibility may not directly impact your heart health, they do contribute to musculoskeletal health. Flexibility helps keep your body free from joint pain and cramping, which can keep you from doing the above exercises. By increasing your flexibility, you’re indirectly helping your heart!

Examples: basic hamstring, quad, and arm stretches, yoga, tai chi.

If you want more exercises tailored to your activity level, we suggest contacting your doctor or an athletic trainer/physical therapist. Schedule an appointment at Beacon today or contact us to learn more about how we can help you and your heart maintain your health today!
